it is impossible,
ridiculous even
to consider how maddening
another’s very existance can be.

decay ever so slowly,
smile wilt and falter.
Figure crumple
like crushed tissue paper
and toothpicks
floating underwater.
time to crash

| Me: | I'm all sorts of fucked up right now... blah. |
|---|---|
| Friend: | It happens to all of us |
| Me: | Yeh, I know. I know... |
i wish it wasn’t true.
the air carries the chill
of a summers fading
nighttime.
kept awake by
stray voices
and airplane
roars.
a car passes,
lights a face now and then
and in a moment
an epiphany
because now we understand.
today was so gawd damn
beautiful.
i felt things i havnt felt
in so long.
this is what it feels like
to be alive
you told me
you wanted me
to give our future the chance to
grow
and all i could think of
is all the women
i have ever looked up to.
they married so young
and never got the chance
to live
the way
that they should have.
All I said was “I am afraid.”
You said “trust me.”
I said, “I do, it’s just…”
and I tried to explain
what it was i was feeling.
but you did not understand,
you couldn’t.
you had already
dedicated so much to me.
so i swallowed
anything i wanted for myself,
because i still cared so much
about the pain in your eyes,
and i told you:
“i guess that means
i willl stay with you
forever.”
Wow.
wow wow wow wow wow wow wow.
this thing is really happening. tomorrow, i will be taking the stage with my fellow poets. we’ll be rockin the mic and having a crazy time. i can’t wait.
to feel truly connected to another human being where there is a deep understanding of the other rooted in the body and mind of both parties involved.
surf
down
stairwells,
into the finished basement,
riding a cascading tidal swell flowing
from overflowing bathtubs
somewhere upstairs,
suds floating lazily like
pearlescent lilies.
marvel at the soggy carpet
squashing under your toes
as you stand ankle deep
in bath water.
The tv flickers,
static
and water floods out
into the backyard.
what have we done?
